Ukraine Just Redirected Its Drone War Back to Refineries — And Rosneft’s Bashneft Complex Took the Hit

Kyiv just pivoted its long-range campaign away from tankers and back to refineries, hitting Rosneft’s Bashneft complex in Ufa and sparking a fire. Ukraine has struck another oil refinery in Russia’s Bashkortostan region, with the Ufa region housing three refineries owned by Bashneft, a subsidiary of Rosneft. The strike lands as Ukraine has struck most of Russia’s oil refineries in recent months, leading to acute fuel shortages in some parts of the country. Every barrel of Russian diesel that doesn’t get refined domestically is one more cargo China and India have to bid for elsewhere.

Orlen Just Locked In a Quarter of Its Crude From Norway — Europe’s Quiet Hedge Against Hormuz Has a Name

While traders obsess over Hormuz tolls and Red Sea reroutes, Central Europe just quietly de-risked itself. Poland’s Orlen secured up to a quarter of its crude oil needs through a new agreement with Equinor, with the three-year contract running from September 2026 and annual supplies ranging from 5 million to over 9 million tonnes. The crude will be supplied to ORLEN refineries in Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic, giving the Central European refiner a longer-term source of oil as the region continues to diversify its energy supply. Expect more term deals like this as Middle East supply risk becomes structural, not episodic.

Dangote Isn’t Just Building a Kenya Refinery — He’s Handing Governments Equity So They Can’t Undercut Him

Dangote’s East Africa play looks less like philanthropy and more like a moat. Aliko Dangote has offered East African countries a combined 30% equity stake in his proposed Kenya refinery, with Kenya taking 10% while Ethiopia and Rwanda have also expressed interest. It lands right as Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has secured a $1 billion underwriting programme for its planned stock market listing that could become Africa’s largest IPO. Giving regional governments a cut buys political cover for cross-border product flows — and locks out rival refiners before they even break ground.
